What is Visual Art Anyway?

Objects resulting from inspiration, observation, and creativity infused with science, engineering, and experimentation.

This week, I have been in production mode, transitioning sketches on paper into art in metal. The object above is an experiment designed to “engineer” the process of connecting butterfly parts to a structural frame. The experiment involved connecting multiple pieces of brass and copper to a construction post using silver solder, a process requiring a basic understanding of metal properties, heat gain, heat loss, solder flow, and flux content. The construction post will connect multi-layered butterflies to a bronze structure using a tube-and-pin configuration and epoxy. The result of this experiment is an artistic conglomeration of scrap metal parts that I intend to include in my capstone gallery exhibit.
