From the beginning of January through mid-March, I developed twelve concept sketches for my current project, “Prairie Dances”. My project mentor, Liz Bucheit, reviewed the sketches and recommended that I construct scale models to verify the aesthetics and balance of each design; this was great advice. I built models for the simplest sculptures using cardboard, glue, and tape. During the model building process, I modified the designs as appropriate to adjust for visual form, balance, and constructability. Five of my designs will be reasonably straightforward to construct, though the forming process, soldering connections, and chasing details will be somewhat tedious. The remaining designs are more complicated and may not make it to the October 30 Capstone gallery event.
The next step is learning to solder like a jeweler.
