My “Prairie Dances” mentor, Liz Bucheit, is a goldsmith, jewelry and body adornment artist, and a teacher with over 30 years of experience creating Scandinavian metal art. AND, Liz is not afraid of fire.  Her first task was to teach me how to light and calibrate my new jeweler’s torch. Next, we discussed the flow properties of three types of silver solder and where and when to use each type. We analyzed my concept models, discussed construction methods, and soldered a few pieces that I had prepared as learning demonstrations. In our second soldering session, we took on a more difficult task, the butterfly. Liz demonstrated the importance of creating a heat-reflective work environment, in this case, a charcoal surround.
